Wairau River wines take their name from the river that runs through the heart of the Marlborough wine region. (Wairau is Maori for `many waters`). The Rose family were pioneers in planting vines in the 1970`s and after originally selling the grapes to other wineries (like Cloudy Bay) they launched their own label in the early 1990`s. Today their foresight has created a very successful company which remains family owned and run. Wairau River is one of the largest independent wine estates in Marlborough, and the range of elegant wines is characteristically expressive of its Marlborough roots.

Sauvignon Blanc Wairau River 2016. (Decanter Gold May 2017)

Classic expression of the dry, gooseberry, grass and passion fruit style of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Clean and crisp it is bursting with a flinty minerality with flavours of grapefruit, gooseberry, herbs and white stone fruit. Expressive on the palate, finishing with great length. This fashionable white wine is a benchmark by which New World Sauvignons are judged. Awarded a Gold Medal at the prestigious Royal Hobart Show.

Reserve Sauvignon Blanc Wairau River 2016. (Decanter Platinum Best in Class May 2017)

Wairau River`s reserve range are high quality wines made from carefully selected parcels of fruit. The reserve Sauvignon is from the Longbend vineyard on the banks of the Opawa River, this single vineyard wine has an intense nose of citrus and passionfruit with vibrant gooseberry, gunflint and mineral nuances. A fresh tropical palate is finely textured and seamless from extended lees contact creating a complex finish and creamy texture.

Pinot Gris Wairau River 2016. (Air New Zealand Gold 2017)

Gewürztraminer is a famously grown in cool climates such as Alsace and Germany. However, in certain areas of New Zealand it flourishes and creates elegant, perfumed wines. The nose is aromatic and full of rose petals and orange rind. The perfumed aromas follow through on the palate with a touch of sweet spices to add complexity. This wine is well balanced with good weight on the palate, a refreshing acidity and good length.

Pinot Noir Black Label Wairau River Reserve 2014. (awarded 95 points by decanter magazine in November 2016)

Produced from the Home Block and Sam Rose`s vineyard this wine provides dark fruits entwined with savoury richness and toasty French oak. A medium bodied Pinot Noir, the complexity of the nose continues through the palate revealing generous fruit weight and mocha nuances delivered with a refined texture and a persistent finish. pairs well with garlic roasted lamb, vension steak or roasted salmon with capers.
