Region

A second wine is the term for a premium wine made by an estate that is second only to their Grand Vin. These wines are produced from the same vineyards as the grand vin but at a more accessible price and can be a great introduction to their `older sibling`. In the vineyard and winery, these wines generally receive the same treatment as the grand vin however, the overall blend and maturation are different.

Producer

The property was first purchased in the 18th century by Scotsman George Smith, who gave the estate its present name. He also built the manor house and exported his – by now famous – wine to England on his own ships. The estate passed hands a few times until it was bought by Daniel Cathiard, a former ski champion on the French Olympic team. In 1990, Daniel and his wife Florence sold all their business interests to buy Château Smith Haut Lafitte. Over a two year period, they invested massively in renovating both the winery buildings and the 18th century manor house built by George Smith, where they decided to live and to devote their energy to their newfound passion; making outstanding white and red wines.
Tasting Notes
Made from a blend of wines from in Smith Haut Lafitte estate, this wine has an expressive nose of black cherry, blackcurrant, cedar and clove aromas. The palate is full of concentrated black fruit, sweet spices and a streak of flinty minerality, all supported by a firm tannic structure and a good acidity. This all comes together perfectly to create a wine which is well structed from begining to end finishing well with lingering black fruit and a touch of coffee and tobacco.
Food
Serve with roasted meats such as beef or dark game.
