Geoff Merrill - McLaren Vale, Australia

Geoff Merrill

Having been raised on a sheep station in his early years, Geoff’s association with wine started when his family moved to the Barossa Valley, just north of Adelaide, when aged 11. Following his `apprenticeship` at Chateau Reynella, in 1985 he purchased the historic Mount Hurtle winery where he subsequently launched his own wines.

Geoff Merrill Wines has vineyards in two of Australia’s classic viticultural regions; in the McLaren Vale as well as in the Coonawarra district. Individual growing conditions at each site provide an exciting opportunity to highlight the very best of what each region has to offer.

Geoff’s winemaking philosophy has always been to make wine that allows regional, varietal and vintage expression, without excessive winemaker intervention and that great wine is a matter of achieving this balance.

Renowned for his handle bar moustache and his larger than life personality, his talents were recently rewarded when he received the legendary Jimmy Watson Trophy, probably Australia`s most prestigious wine award.
