Pisano Family Vineyards

Pisano

The Pisano vineyards belong to a group of small family vignerons with an artisan tradition of making wines that reflect the character of the land and the people.

It's not a  business, it's a way of life

Francesco Pisano arrived in Uruguay in 1870 from Italy (the great grandfather of the current owners). The original vineyards were planted in 1914 by his son Cesare. Today, this winemaking tradition continues and they produce some of the country`s most prestigious and best wines with distinctive character oriented to the high quality, niche market. These hand crafted wines are produced in limited quantities and total production at the Pisano family cellars is only 18,000 cases per year across the range of these award winning varietals.

Pisano is a family affair and now owned by the second generation brothers Daniel, Eduardo and Gustavo Pisano.  Daniel looks after sales, Eduardo manages the vineyard and Gustavo is head winemaker.  Their philosophy is that their wines should reflect the people who make it, as well as the soil and the climate,

The family follows biodynamic viticultural methods and cultivates low yielding vines planted at high density and supported by green harvests if yields need to be suppressed further.

There are four winemakers working under the direction of Gustavo Pisano.  In the cellar they use simple winery equipment to keep the process as natural as possible including researching native yeast strains to enhance their wines.

Tannat was introduced to Uruguay in 1870 by Basque immigrants and is now considered the country's signature grape. The estate owned vines are grown on chalky-clay soils in the cool, maritime climate of the southern Uruguayan cost.  The long slow ripening preserves the varietal characteristics of the grape.
